Her Heart Bleeds – New Painting by Bernadette Wulf

I started working on this piece a couple of months ago. (See larger image at bottom of post.) At first Her Heart Bleeds was all white with a white robed figure and the red heart bleeding. Sorry I forgot to take a photo at that point.

This image represents the way I felt after hearing hundreds of “Me Too” statements from friends and strangers. Media news of political events, mass shootings, factory farms, and the endless pollution of planet Earth all poured into the moment of creation. The result felt somehow liberating, but it was far from finished.

It needed red! Red for bleeding, for anger, for anguish. And it needed pink for love, for the feminine, for joy. So I splashed and splattered red and pink all over it.

That felt good, but it didn’t make for a very good painting. It needed light. Of course – light and fire. Fire for burning, for warming, for destroying all that harms and hurts. Light for clarity and hope.

So I added light – white and yellow above and fierce orange flames below. That felt a lot better, but it still looked rather flat and boring.

Finally, I went to work on the image to enhance the light and the detail without sacrificing the burning flames or the anguish of her bleeding heart. She feels the pain. Yes. But she is more than pain. Much more. She is triumphant. Her vulnerability is her power.

Her Heart Bleeds, indeed. Compassion is the very source of her light. It is what allows her to become one with the pain and the burning, and to transcend it. Ultimately, this is a very transcendent image – an image of triumph over adversity, hope for all that heals, and inspiration to remember the infinite power that lives within each of our hearts.

That includes your own heart. Remember.
