The Key to a Magical Life

The Magic of Tranquility

There is always a lull after a storm — a window of peace and calm. And storms can be internal as well as external, literal or metaphorical. The recent storm in my life has been a combination of wedding excitement and accident recovery happening in my house, because my place works best for handicap access.

Neither of these events were about me personally, but both brought a flurry of visitors and activity to my usually calm and quiet home.

Now my son and his new wife are off on their honeymoon and my injured son-in-law is getting more self-sufficient by the day. And me? I’m in that magical lull of perfect peace.

It’s magical, because it is the space where everything and nothing can coexist, where there is unlimited potential to make our dreams come true.

We’re detached. Content. Knowing all is well.

This painting of Brugmansia flowers, called Serenity, is one of the few plein air oil paintings I’ve done. I painted it at a friend’s house by her pool. The Buddha statue really anchors the serene feeling of calm after a storm. View a larger image or order prints here – https://bernadette-wulf.pixels.com/featured/serenity-bernadette-wulf.html

But is all really well, you may wonder?

That is a tricky question, because many things certainly don’t seem well to our ego-mind. We look around at the world and see a thousand things that seem to be wrong. There’s cruelty, lies, war, crime, famine, drought, flooding, fires, starvation, human trafficking, toxins, racism, sexism, pollution, disease and a whole lot more that seems far from well.

Escape the Matrix!I call that “the Matrix” reality. It seems real, but it is an illusion we are born into.

All the while, our higher self is basking in bliss. It knows that all really is well and it is aware that everything that seems wrong is happening for a reason and even chaos has a purpose.

It is that tranquil knowing that all is well that opens the door for new possibilities to emerge.

That’s Where Magic Comes In!

Magic, as Dion Fortune so famously stated, is “the art and science of causing change in consciousness in accordance with will.”

Will, of course, is our power of choice to shift our perception or make something happen. In this case we are using will to change our consciousness. The catch is that will alone cannot force our consciousness to change. Will can only point the way. Then we have to get the subconscious mind to agree and support our wishes.

The “art and science” of it is all about using tools of magic passed down to us from our ancestors. Those tools communicate directly with the subconscious mind.

The subconscious, according to Dr. Bruce Lipton and many others, controls over 90% of our lives. If the subconscious is not on board with your conscious choices, the subconscious will always override the wishes of the conscious mind.

Welcome to your magical lifeWe see this every year when people make New Year’s resolutions. The conscious mind comes up with perfectly rational plans to improve life, lose weight, make new friends, get a better job, or achieve any number of other accomplishments.

The conscious will attempts to make these resolutions a reality, but within a few weeks, most or all of them are forgotten.

That’s because the powerful subconscious mind has its own ideas about how life should unfold. It may believe that extra weight is protective, or that losing weight would invite too much attention or the wrong kind of attention. It could have a deep seated belief that you are not worthy or not good enough to have more friends, or more money, or the house of your dreams.

So we have to find ways to reprogram the subconscious mind with things like hypnotism, EFT, psychotherapy, or magic.

How Magic Changes the Subconscious

I would revise Dion Fortune’s statement just a bit by saying that magic is “the art and science of causing change in the subconscious in accordance with will.” Because real change can only happen when the subconscious is in agreement.

Sure, we can achieve powerful states using our will, but they tend to evaporate as soon as we shift our focus — unless we have tapped into the deeper layers of the subconscious and shifted its perspective.

The way to do that is to communicate with the subconscious in ways it can understand.

The subconscious is a lot like a pre-verbal infant. It doesn’t understand words or logic. You have to bypass the conscious mind by using pictures, songs/chants, ritual, rhythm, rhyme, repetition, fragrance, touch, taste or symbols. Those are things the subconscious mind can integrate.

Key to a magical lifeUsing Magical Tools

Magical tools are symbols that can be touched. They have a long history and meaning in the collective consciousness, so we immediately recognize tools like the wand, the pentacle, the cauldron, the sword and stone as magical objects, even if our conscious mind rejects them. Casting a spell (usually a chant using rhythm and rhyme) while holding a wand can greatly enhance the power of your intention, because it communicates directly with the subconscious.

So next time you decide to add a little magic to your life, don’t forget to:

  • find that tranquil place in your psyche where all things are possible
  • get very clear about what you want
  • communicate your wishes to your subconscious mind with symbols, chants and other methods it can understand.
  • …and then just focus on appreciating everything you already have.

That is the key to a magical life!
