Lies My Mother Told Me

Enchanted Planet Blog

Personal Lies and Cultural Lies

Okay, I’ll admit it wasn’t just my mother who told lies—and she didn’t even do it intentionally. She was actually a very decent woman who tried her best to live a good life. But it’s a catchy title, so I’m sticking with it.

But Mom actually did tell me a lot of lies—even if it was unintentional. They were lies she believed without question. And of course she wasn’t the only one.

Our entire culture is built on lies.

lies shape our realityI suppose Mom thought her lies would somehow steel me against the slings and arrows of the world—or outrageous fortune, as the saying goes. But that’s the problem.

There was nothing I really needed to steel myself against.

The Universe Has My Back

The Universe has been conspiring to support me from the get go. So why did my mother tell me things like, “It’s a cold cruel world out there,” and “You can’t make a living as an artist.”

And then there was, “Children should be seen and not heard,” which I apparently took literally, since I spent most of my childhood as a functional mute… at least when adults were around.

Those are all cultural lies that my mother accepted as truth. They shaped her experience of life, and mine too—until I learned to question them.

I really was expecting the world to be cruel, and for a couple of decades that seemed to be true. But, once I started questioning what I was taught, I discovered that the world on the whole is a delightful place full of infinite possibilities.

By and large, people seem to be well-meaning and helpful. Prosperity is there for the taking. Opportunities abound. And somehow I’ve managed to thrive well into my 70s while doing exactly what I like most of the time.

It wasn’t always like that. For a long time I believed the lies. I thought I had to struggle, sacrifice and work hard to get by. I thought money was hard to get and jobs were supposed to be difficult, or boring. So that’s what I manifested.

…until one day when the truth began to dawn on me.

I have to give Abraham-Hicks most of the credit for that. They showed me a whole new way to look at reality.

But even though I immediately recognized the truth of the Abraham teachings, they didn’t “work” for me right away. It took me a few years to learn how to implement what they were teaching, and then everything turned around.

I started expecting the Universe to support me and it did… it does!

And the more I expect to be supported in a life of joy and prosperity, the more wonderful it feels to be alive in this world. My life transformed from struggle and lack to ease and plenty.

woman enjoying her job - freedom!Everything I need and want is provided, and it will also be provided for you or anyone who aligns with the laws of the Universe. That is the promise of the New Earth.

It has actually been true all along, but now more and more people are waking up to realize that the dog-eat-dog world of struggle and competition is a false Matrix reality. We don’t have to believe it anymore.

So I’m “Privileged”

It’s politically correct these days to cop to being privileged whenever we have more of anything than someone else, and hey, I’m the first to admit that I’m one of the lucky ones.

Sure, I had my share of childhood traumas and resulting neurosis. I’ve always been a social misfit, highly sensitive empath and vocally challenged weirdo, but I’ve learned how to make it work.

Just about every family is built on cultural lies

I was lucky to be a white child in an affluent community where I got a good education.

It was my good fortune to have parents who cared about good nutrition, exercise and life balance (that was mostly my dad, since my mom was usually busy raising one of my nine younger siblings—she was a good cook, though, and we always had plenty to eat).

I was lucky to be generally healthy and intelligent, in spite of my early childhood respiratory issues (strep and EBV) and dyslexic learning challenges.

So yeah, I’m privileged and that probably made it easier for me to believe what Abraham was teaching.

But that doesn’t mean a less privileged person can’t also turn their life around. The laws of the Universe work for everyone equally. Some people just have to take a bigger leap of faith.

Poverty Consciousness and Victim Mentality Are Cultural Lies

I had to clear my poverty consciousness and victim mentality before things shifted in my life… and that’s really what this blog post is all about.

Once I caught on to the Abraham teachings and learned how to live in the flow, I wanted everyone to know how effortless life can be. I wanted people to know what I hadn’t known as a child and young adult. So I became a Law of Attraction coach.

Now that I’ve been a Law of Attraction coach for a few decades, it always baffles me when someone reaches out to me for coaching and then tells me that they don’t believe they attracted their reality, because that is blaming the victim. And of course they see themselves as a victim.

law of attraction—question concepts like victimhood and lack I realize that people are victimized every day, but there is always more to the story. And when people don’t want to look at WHY they are being victimized and how they can empower themselves to avoid it, there’s not much I can offer them.

Yet sometimes they keep telling me they need help while rejecting every suggestion I offer—that makes me feel like my brain is being scrambled with a wire whisk.

I wish them well, but they are not ready for coaching until they are ready to take responsibility for everything in their lives, good and bad.

The Biggest Cultural Lies of All

I think the concepts of lack and being a victim may be the biggest cultural lies of all.

They are beliefs that take away our power and put responsibility for our problems squarely on everyone and everything but ourselves.

But the only thing we actually have the power to change is ourselves. So where does that leave us?

Up against a wall, endlessly blaming others, or fate, for our life experiences, with no way to escape.

What do you believe? Are you living in a false reality?Lies like, “It’s a cold cruel world out there,” set the stage.

We expect to be harmed. We expect to struggle. Life already looks like a challenge even before we leave the nest.

But it’s not the truth.

As one of my favorite teachers, P’taah, says:

The Law of Attraction is absolute!  Everything is about electromagnetic energy, and that is the simplest way we can describe who you are. Everything in existence has a frequency, whether or not you know it, feel it, recognize it, everything is simply a band of energy, and like attracts like – it is electromagnetic.

We attract what we believe. Life matches our vibration, positive or negative. So if we expect to be victimized or impoverished, that’s what we will attract—whether we consciously want it or not.

What Are Your Subconscious Beliefs?

Living the dream—examining cultural liesWhat do you expect life to provide for you?

It matters, because that is exactly what is shaping every minute of your life.

I hope you believe that you can do, be and have everything you want—believe it down to the core of your soul.

However, it takes time and introspection to become 100% sure of that, because we have all been brainwashed with multiple lies ever since we were born—so much so that the lies seem like truth.

It takes a lot of awareness to recognize and clear the fears and expectations that attract things and experiences we don’t want.

Often they are hiding in our subconscious, running the show without our knowledge. But we can see the patterns they create in our lives.

These patterns are reflections of the beliefs running under the surface. And once we recognize them we can weed them out.

Freedom from cultural lies. That's where life gets fun!Life is Meant to Be Fun!

That’s where life gets fun! Don’t you love to recognize the lies you bought into and chuck them out with the weekly garbage?

Each lie we eradicate leaves room for more truth. And more truth means more empowerment, more awareness of our connection with All That Is, and more awesome manifestations of love and joy, prosperity and fulfillment.

In short, more room for the life of our dreams.

…well, that turned out to be a longwinded way of explaining a simple truth I live by: Look for things to appreciate. Look for en-JOY-ment. Look for things that uplift you, fulfill you and empower you.

All the rest is bullshit—lies.

If it makes you feel scared, undermines your confidence, or makes you feel like a victim, it’s a lie. Within you is the power to shape the Universe and the Universe is ready and willing to take the shape of your dreams.

The question is, are you ready and willing to step into your power to claim your dreams?

Make it so!
