When is the right time to Use Your Head?
There are a lot of idioms in the English language about heads. Telling us to use them, get out of them, keep them down, or up, or not lose them.
We can even combine them by putting our heads together, because two heads are better than one… ideally not on the same body.
Falling head over heels never made sense to me. Isn’t that where our heads naturally belong, at least while we’re upright?
You can have a big head. That happens when you let success go to your head. You can even bite someone’s head off, or laugh your own head off, both of which sound terribly painful.
And one of my favorites is bury your head in the sand, which I was always told had something to do with ostriches, a rumor apparently started by Pliny the Elder.
No. Ostriches are not that dumb. They would have been wiped out long ago if they had done that… and gotten a lot of sand in those big eyes of theirs.

All of which leads me to the conclusion that our heads are very important in the general scheme of things, which I suppose is pretty obvious to anyone with half a brain. As vessels containing our amazing brains and rational minds, our heads have become the main focus of our Western educational system.
But What if We’re Using Our Heads the Wrong Way?
Schooling aside, what if your head or brain is really only meant to focus you in physical reality and help you interpret your immediate experience—not to control every outcome or figure out how your life path should unfold.
That’s an important distinction.
Bashar and other teachers tell us that our Soul, Higher Mind, or Higher Self, is the part of our consciousness that actually conceives our thoughts and ideas. It can see the whole picture of our life, past, present and future, so it knows where we need to go. The brain and its rational mind cannot, because it is basically just a receiver or translator.
Rings true to me.

In other words, the Higher Mind broadcasts the signal—inspiration, intuition, impulses, and the larger organizing perspective. While the brain functions as a radio or TV antenna.
The best tasks for the head/brain/rational mind are noticing, interpreting, and experiencing whatever shows up in our physical life. But it is never the original source of ideas and cannot be relied on for finding our direction in life.
In other words, contrary to popular philosophy, we’ll never understand things like our purpose, our life path, or the direction we need to take to have a fulfilling life by using our heads.
But our heads can help us take care of the present situation and practical details. We can also use our heads to make choices and take concrete action on what feels most alive, attractive, or exciting.
Heads are great for:
- Observing results and circumstances without assuming you must know the entire path in advance
- Identifying beliefs—especially fearful or limiting ones—that color your interpretation of events
- Translating inner guidance into workable action in day-to-day life
What Your Head is Not for…
Bashar’s point is not about “abandoning logic.” Rather, he warns against using the rational mind to seek certainty, predict every step, or dictate how your preferred outcome has to happen.
He describes that as outside its “job description”—though it’s great at perceiving how something already happened, it can’t know beforehand how things will happen.
So, when we say, “get out of your head,” it means: stop compulsively trying to control or over-analyze the route, while still using your practical mind to assess physical reality, make decisions, and act responsibly.
So how can we tap into that all-knowing wisdom of our soul or Higher Self?
That’s where things really start to get fun!
